We are pleased to announce a special issue focused on wilderness medicine education in Wilderness & Environmental Medicine that highlights new and innovative perspectives and research on the impact, contributions, and unique challenges and opportunities within wilderness medicine education.

This special issue is essential in improving evidence-based educational techniques and curriculum design in wilderness medicine, addressing a wide audience from outdoor enthusiasts to healthcare students and professionals. 

This special edition explores and highlights innovative educational strategies, curriculum development, teaching methodologies, and assessment tools specifically tailored for wilderness medicine education.

Potential topics for this special issue may include:

  • Historical perspectives of the development of wilderness medicine education and opportunities
  • Research on simulation, scenario-based learning and didactics.
  • Innovative Teaching Methods: Exploration of simulation-based learning, online platforms, and hands-on field experiences teaching wilderness medicine.
  • Case reports related to novel instructional techniques in wilderness education
  • Editorials or original concepts
  • Best practice guidelines for wilderness medicine education including curriculum and course development
  • Curricular Developments: How are wilderness medicine curricula being developed and integrated into medical education? What are the core competencies and learning objectives?
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Strategies for assessing competency in wilderness medicine skills and knowledge.
  • Interdisciplinary Approaches: Contributions from various disciplines such as nursing, paramedics, and allied health professionals in wilderness medicine education.
  • Global Perspectives: How is wilderness medicine education being approached in different parts of the world? What can we learn from diverse settings and cultures?
  • Challenges and Solutions: Addressing barriers in wilderness medicine education, such as resource limitations, environmental challenges, and accessibility

All published papers in WEM should be related to aspects of the wilderness environment. For more details about the journal and submission guidelines, please refer to the WEM Guide for Authors.

All submissions will undergo the same rigorous, single-blind peer review process as any other submitted manuscript to WEM. Final decisions regarding ultimate acceptance rest solely with the Editors. Authors should submit manuscripts through the journal’s online submission system with a statement in the cover letter that the submission is intended for the special issue on Wilderness Medicine Education.
