Frequently Asked Questions:

Optional camping overnights and weekend activities will be offered to take full advantage of the Park, and to test out gear as this will be the first backcountry experience for some of our students.
Q: Can we get FAWM credits for this course?
Q: Will we get a Wilderness First Responder Course as part of the elective?
A: You will get all of the course work and practicals for the WFR course with the option to take the online exam for certification through Roane State University Faculty.
Q: What is the cost and what does it cover?
A: $1350 for 4 weeks. This includes the cost of the course including syllabus, practical skills labs, WFR course, local field trips, room and board for 4 weeks.
Q: When are applications accepted?
A: July 1 – Nov 1. Applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis as applications are received. Once the elective is filled students will be placed on a waiting list. Last year the course filled, however many were accepted off the waiting list.
Q: Do I need extensive camping experience to take this course?
A: No. For some of our students, this is their first backpacking experience. Because many students have had experience, the novice camping students benefit from the sharing of knowledge and experience of not just instructors, but peers. This usually turns into an exceptional and supportive opportunity for the novice camper.
Q: Do I need my own gear?
A: Yes and No. Students have often borrowed and shared gear such as stoves and tents, and this is organized by emails ahead of time and then in person once everyone is at camp together. Students need their own clothing and footwear, in preparation for any type of weather. There may be an opportunity for gear rental from Wilderness Adventure.
