Introduction to Search & Rescue

Join the WMS for a discussion of search & rescue (SAR) aimed at the wilderness medicine provider. Our expert panel will discuss how to adapt your wilderness medicine interests into a search & rescue team. The makeup of common SAR teams, along with mission profiles, and national organizations such as the Mountain Rescue Association will be discussed. Come prepared to engage and ask questions!

Speakers

 

Alison Sheets, MD

Alison is an emergency physician in Boulder, Colorado. She serves as president of the Mountain Rescue Association, vice president of the International Commission on Alpine Rescue (ICAR) Medical Commission, and as medical director for Rocky Mountain Rescue Group. Alison is also a past chair of the WMS Search & Rescue Committee.

 

Aaron Billin, MD, FAAFP, MFAWM

Aaron is board certified in Family Medicine and practices Emergency Medicine full-time in Powell, Wyoming, where he is the medical director of the emergency department and Powell Valley EMS.  He is a past President of the Wilderness Medical Society, a Master Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, and a member of the WMS Search & Rescue Committee. He serves as a peer reviewer for Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, is a member of Park County Search & Rescue, and serves as the county health officer for Park County, Wyoming. His interests include pre-hospital medical care, human performance in austere environments, and search & rescue.

 

Jason Williams, BS, NRP, DiMM

Jason is the Director of the International Mountain Medicine Center at the University of New Mexico. He holds his Bachelors in Emergency Medicine and is a paramedic. He is a member of the International Commission for Alpine Rescue and chairs the international DiMM Regulation and Assessment Committee and is on the Board of Directors of the Wilderness Medical Society. Jason is a past member and president of volunteer-based Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council and formed University of New Mexico’s first helicopter mountain rescue team in collaboration with Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit.
