VOLUNTEERS NEEDED 2/5/2009 Congratulations to the new WMS Associate Student Representative! Cathy Chamberlin is in her second year of medical school at the University of New England in Biddeford, ME and is the president of their wilderness medicine club. She has been a wilderness EMT since 1996 and has worked for numerous non-profit and private outdoor organizations since 1995. During her time with Boulder Outdoor Survival School (1996 - 2001), Cathy also taught primitive and desert survival skills. She began working for Outward Bound Colorado in 2001 where she is a course director and instructor in mountaineering, rock climbing and canyoneering. Cathy has been actively involved in wilderness medicine since 1996 with several search and rescue teams across the country, has worked internationally at a health clinic in a remote village in western Kenya, and teaches wilderness EMT and wilderness first responder courses for the Wilderness Medicine Institute. Later this spring she will take over as the WMS Student Representative when Stephanie Lareau leaves for residency. 1/26/2009 Wilderness Medicine Elective Updates:

inaugural Wilderness Course this spring (3/23-4/4) and there is still

more about the course, visit our website. 1/25/2009 2nd Annual Southeast Student Wilderness Medicine Conference- March 28-29th, 2009 @ UNC School of Medicine at Chapel Hill Facebook Event(click above for more information)
1/9/2009 Additional wilderness medicine electives announced for students and residents alike! Check out Madigan Army Medical Center (new in 2009!), the University of Nevada and the University of Virginia on the electives page... 12/20/2008 Happy Holidays from the
WMS! Hopefully we're all getting a much needed break away from
classes and rotations. Newsletter: A new Cliff Notes (quarterly student newsletter) has been posted to the website. The wilderness medicine section in ACEP released its own quarterly newsletter this month which can be viewed here. Student leadership: For those of you who applied for the position of Associate Student Representative, the results will be announced soon! Stay tuned for further leadership opportunities on one of our Committees as several of the chairs will be graduating this year. SIG of the Quarter: LMU- Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine! Go to the SIG Resources page for more information. (Shae and Gina with their dog, Merckx, right) Facebook: Our group is up to 253 members! Keep spreading the word. There is a new event page for the two main wilderness medicine conferences this winter (Big Sky, MT and Park City, UT). If you plan on attending, drop a note on the event wall so we can plan some student/resident activities. Electives: A new elective opportunity was just added by Wilderness Medical Associates- Canada. Additionally, the UMASS and WMS electives are full but there are still spots available for courses through NOLS/HAEMR, Utah, and Cornell... all in April. The ever-popular Big Sky rotation is full for this year and next, but Dr. Jeff Daniel's is currently accepting applications for the 2010-2011 academic year. See the WM Electives page for more information. Fellowships: Stanford and the University of Utah have traditionally offered the only fellowships available in wilderness medicine. As of this past year, however, fellowship opportunities have doubled. Check out these press releases from Harvard and UCSF Fresno for further details. Information on all fellowship programs can be found on the elective page towards the bottom. New WMS website: The WMS recently updated the layout of their website (see picture below). There is also a new blog which isn't very active at the moment but has great potential. The "educational materials" and "speakers bureau" tabs should come online soon.
If you browse our own website you'll see that it has been updated as well (I didn't want to study for Step 2 anyways) Please check out the list of current SIGs on the SIG Resources page. If your school's information is out of date, or missing altogether, please let us know. And as always, if you have any stories/pictures you would like to see on the website, or any ideas in general, please send them our way. Thanks. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Is your SIG
registered with the WMS? Check out SIG
resources for an updated list of all current SIGs! |
