SIG Resources
Featured SIG: Jefferson Wilderness and Disaster Medicine Society (October 2009) Here
are some pics from their recent moulage course.
Has your SIG done something worth writing about? Have pictures from recent activities you would like to share? Email them to the WMS Student Representative. Student Interest Groups This is a list of all SIGs currently registered with the Wilderness Medical Society. If your school is not listed, please scroll down to find out how to register. If you think your SIG is missing, or the information is out of date, please email the SIG Committee.
There are three
tiers of SIG membership: Active SIGs, Inactive SIGs and Pending SIGs. Active SIGs Active SIGs will be required to have a minimum of 1
member in the interest group who each contribute $50 annual membership
dues to the WMS. Students who are members of SIGs are not required
to join the WMS and pay the annual dues, but becoming a member of the
WMS is highly encouraged. Active SIGs will receive the following benefits: A free
hardcopy subscription to the journal: Wilderness and
Environmental Medicine, the peer-reviewed publication of the WMS; a
free subscription to the Wilderness Medicine newsletter for
each member; significant discounts to WMS conferences and Student Round
Tables; and WMS store discounts. In addition to having a minimum of 1
WMS members per year, active SIGs will also be required to update the
WMS on a yearly basis (see below) with contact information for the SIG
Leader and one alternate SIG member ("renewal"). Due to the time
demands and variable schedules of upperclassmen, it is recommended that
at least one of these individuals be a 1st or 2nd year student. Inactive SIGs SIGs who are unable to meet the 1 WMS member minimum per year or fail to complete the annual renewal process will become Inactive SIGs. Inactive SIGs will lose all Active SIG benefits. Inactive SIGs will still receive e-mails regarding WMS events for the year and, if the group decides to meet the requirements for active status, it will be easy to transition to the active tier.
Pending SIGs The
Pending SIG tier will represent all of the groups that are in the
process of either applying or becoming Active SIGs.
In order to register your SIG as Active, the SIG registration forms and annual questionnaire must be filled out and returned to the Wilderness Medical Society by November 1st of each year regardless of their original application date. Active status is valid from January to January.
Student Membership Roster: Each SIG should submit a single membership roster that includes all members’ information, along with checks (singly at $50/member or one check for the total sum). Members joining separately from the original SIG registration or renewal may join by filling out a SIG Student Membership Form. Letter of Approval: Finally, you must submit a letter of approval from your institution that states that your SIG is officially recognized. This letter may be from your office of Student Affairs, or other department that oversees student organizations and activities. Active SIG status is not attained
until membership forms and dues payments are received by the WMS office SIG Leader Name and E-mail address Each school’s SIG Leader is identified on the WMS SIG Website, including their name and email address. This information is used only to allow for ease of communication to SIG Leaders. Educational Resources Conference
Event Planning Guide: This document was written by
students at the University of North Carolina, on their experiences in
organizing and running a Wilderness Medicine seminar. It is a superb
resource that provides a vast amount of useful information. For additional information feel free to contact the WMS Student Representative |
