Student Interest Group (SIG) Registration

How To Establish a Student Interest Group (SIG)

The process is simple — all the details follow below.  First, download and fill out the SIG Registration Forms, which can be found in the Forms section of the WMS SIG website.  The forms include:

·         Registration Checklist

·         SIG Information Form

·         Student Membership Roster (and SIG Student Membership Forms)

·         Letter of Approval to be signed from your office of student affairs

Your group will be (re)activated when the forms and dues payments for all of your members are received.  It will take at least six weeks for the WMS to process your application.  Please contact the WMS Student Representative at wmsstudentrep@wms.org with any questions regarding activation of SIG status or memberships.  Forms and dues can be mailed to the following address:

Wilderness Medical Society
2150 E 1300 S, Suite 500
Salt Lake City, Utah 84106
(801) 990-2988
(801) 990-2987 (Fax)

SIG  Benefits

  • One hardcopy subscription to Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, the Peer-reviewed journal published quarterly by the WMS.  This subscription will be sent to the SIG leader, who is expected to make it available to all members.  Additionally, all dues paying members will receive a hardcopy of the WEM journal as well.

  • Wilderness Medicine Newsletter: A quarterly newsletter describing the activities of the society and additional wilderness medicine features.  Each dues paying member of the SIG will receive their own copy of the newsletter.

  • WMS Practice Guidelines:  Official statements of the WMS related to best methods of handling wilderness related trauma, illness, or environmental injury.  Each dues paying member of the SIG will receive their own copy of the Practice Guidelines.

  • Discounts on WMS gear and books.

  • Active SIG members may attend the annual WMS Summer conference and Student Round Table at a reduced rate (currently $195). As of May 1st, 2005, the WMS is no longer able to subsidize conference fees for SIG members (i.e., no fee waivers are available). We hope the waiver will be reinstituted in the near future - please contact the Student Representative with any questions at wmsstudentrep@wms.org.
  • Access to the WMS website.  One login/password will be provided for each dues paying member.

SIG Membership

A Student Interest Group may be established by any group of students enrolled in an approved educational program in pursuit of a degree or certification related to the health sciences.  This includes Medical Doctor, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Physician’s Assistant, Nursing Degree, Master of Health Sciences and Master of Public Health.  SIG’s must be approved by the students’ University through the Dean of Student Affairs or similar authority.  Students who are not pursuing one of the above listed degrees may petition the Wilderness Medical Society to establish an SIG, subject to approval by the WMS Executive Director.

There are three tiers of SIG membership: Active SIGs, Inactive SIGs and Pending SIGs.

Active SIGs

Active SIGs will be required to have a minimum of 1 member in the interest group who each contribute $50 annual membership dues to the WMS.  Students who are members of SIGs are not required to join the WMS and pay the annual dues, but becoming a member of the WMS is highly encouraged.

Active SIGs will receive the following benefits: A free hardcopy subscription to the journal:  Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, the peer-reviewed publication of the WMS; a free subscription to the Wilderness Medicine newsletter for each member; significant discounts to WMS conferences and Student Round Tables; and WMS store discounts.

In addition to having a minimum of 1 WMS members per year, active SIGs will also be required to update the WMS on a yearly basis with contact information for the SIG Leader and one alternate SIG member ("renewal").  Due to the time demands and variable schedules of upperclassmen, it is recommended that at least one of these individuals be a 1st or 2nd year student.

Inactive SIGs

SIGs who are unable to meet the 1 WMS member minimum per year or fail to complete the annual renewal process will become Inactive SIGs. Inactive SIGs will lose all Active SIG benefits.  Inactive SIGs will still receive e-mails regarding WMS events for the year and, if the group decides to meet the requirements for active status, it will be easy to transition to the active tier.

Pending SIGs

The Pending SIG tier will represent all of the groups that are in the process of either applying or becoming Active SIGs.

Dues

Membership in the WMS is $50 for a student membership.  Dues payments must be received before a member will be eligible for member benefits and dues payments for at least one member of a SIG must be received in order to attain “Active” status.

*Note: Any SIG student student who continues their membership into their residency can continue to pay the $50 rate as a resident if there is no interruption or lapse in paying of dues.

Registration Procedures

In order to register your SIG as Active, the following SIG Registration Forms must be filled out and returned to the Wilderness Medical Society:

SIG Information Form: This form requires contact information of the student who will be the SIG Leader, an alternate student point of contact, the SIG’s faculty advisor, and the institution’s Dean of Student Affairs.

Student Membership Roster: Each SIG should submit a single membership roster that includes all members’ information, along with checks (singly at $50/member or one check for the total sum). Members joining separately from the original SIG registration or renewal may join by filling out a SIG Student Membership Form.

Letter of Approval: Finally, you must submit a letter of approval from your institution that states that your SIG is officially recognized.  This letter may be from your office of Student Affairs, or other department that oversees student organizations and activities.

Forms are available for download from the WMS SIG website.  Active SIG status is not attained until membership forms and dues payments are received by the WMS office.

Renewal

SIG Active status is valid for one year.  (January to January) A new SIG Information Form, Membership Roster, and Letter of Approval must be filled out and received by the WMS by November 1st  of each year, along with appropriate dues payment in order to maintain Active status.  All SIG’s must renew their registration by November 1st regardless of their original application date.

SIG Leader Name and E-mail address

Normally, a school’s SIG Leader is identified on the WMS SIG Website, including their name and email address.  This information is used only to allow for ease of communication to SIG Leaders.

Wilderness & Environmental Medicine Journal

Each Active SIG will only receive one free hardcopy of the Journal (remember that all dues paying WMS student members receive free online access to the Journal).  The journal will be sent to the individual identified as the SIG Leader.  It is expected that the SIG Leader make the journal available to all members of the SIG.

WMS Website

Each dues paying SIG member will receive a logon id and password for the Wilderness Medical Society’s website.  This will allow access to all areas of the website, including the member database, online newsletter and online journal.

Educational Resources

In the past, powerpoint lectures were available for loan to SIGs.  The WMS lecture series is currently being updated and we will try to make them available in the near future.  Thank you for your patience.
