Individual Student Membership in the Wilderness Medical Society

The purpose of the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) is to encourage, foster, support or conduct activities or programs concerned with life sciences, that can improve the scientific knowledge of the membership and the general public in matters related to wilderness environments and human activities in these environments.

The mission of the Wilderness Medical Society is to establish an organization composed of qualified physicians, allied health specialists and other qualified individuals that will concern itself with matters related to wilderness medicine and the benefits, health, safety and medical care of the individual in the wilderness.

Membership in the WMS is a tremendous opportunity for students to become active participants in a worldwide, professional medical organization.

Who May Join

Membership in the Wilderness Medical Society as an “Individual Student Member” is open to students enrolled in an approved educational program in pursuit of a degree or certification related to the health sciences who do not have access to an established Student Interest Group (SIG). This includes Medical Doctor, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Physician’s Assistant, Nursing Degree, Master of Health Sciences and Master of Public Health. Students who are not pursuing one of the above listed degrees may petition the Wilderness Medical Society for Student Membership, subject to approval by the WMS Executive Director.

Application

Individuals can join by submitting an application to the WMS. It can be downloaded from the Forms section of the WMS-SIG website. Individual

Membership dues are $50/year.

A subscription to Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, the Peer reviewed journal published quarterly by the WMS.
Wilderness Medicine Letter: A quarterly newsletter describing the activities of the society and additional wilderness medicine features.
WMS Practice Guidelines: Official statements of the WMS related to best methods of handling wilderness related trauma, illness, or environmental injury.
Discounts on WMS gear, books and conference fees.
