Aloha, WMS Members, Colleagues and Friends
…
Six years ago, while snowboarding at the WMS Jackson Hole winter conference,
we conceived of a new type of WMS conference. Between powder shots,
we decided a new conference which focused on medical issues involved
with surfing liquid waves instead of frozen ones was called for; one
in which we would discuss activities that take place on the beaches,
oceans and deserts of the world.
So, being boardriders, we picked the
global epicenter of surfing, kiteboarding and windsurfing: Hawaii. Turns
out, there's way more here than extreme water sports. You can cycle
the road to Hana, backpack in the Haleakala Crater, hike the Seven Sacred
Falls, and dive the coves of Honoloa Bay in the Mokuleia Marine Life
Conservation District. Plus, low impact sports abound right outside
the doors of the lecture hall: stand-up paddle surfing, sailing, snorkeling,
and world class golf.
For this year, we've assembled an all-star
cast. Local doctors will speak on the world-famous Kona Ironman Triathlon,
lifeguarding the North Shore, and hyperbaric medicine. We've brought
in famed open ocean expert, Dr. Michael Jacobs, to speak on all things
sailing, and long-time speaker Sheryl Olson will cover cruise ship medicine
and navigation on land, at sea, and underwater. For a special treat,
photographer and environmentalist James Kay will speak on the Glen Canyon
Dam controversy.
If you have an extra day, why not learn
to dive: dive certification is easy and is offered through Maui Diving (800-959-7319).
